The Port of Tokyo handled 357,973 TEUs of foreign-trade containers in August. This represented a 4.9% increase year on year, according to preliminary figures from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s Bureau of Port and Harbor and as Japan International Freight Forwarders Association (JIFFA) reported.
Loaded containers reached 265,747 TEUs, also up 4.9 percent. Empty containers totaled 92,226 TEUs, a rise of 5 percent.
Export volumes showed mixed results. Loaded exports fell slightly to 63,695 TEUs, down 0.3 percent. Empty export containers increased to 91,614 TEUs, up 6.4 percent.
Imports grew more strongly. Loaded import containers rose to 202,052 TEUs, an increase of 6.7 percent. Empty imports dropped sharply to just 612 TEUs, down 64.2 percent.
From January to August, Tokyo exported 517,318 TEUs of loaded containers, a decrease of 4.8 percent. Empty exports reached 729,321 TEUs, an increase of 7.8 percent. During the same period, loaded imports totaled 1.57 million TEUs, up 6.6 percent. Empty imports fell to 8,237 TEUs, a decline of 37.1 percent.
