Port of Long Beach, Shenzhen Port Group, Hutchison Ports YANTIAN, South Coast Air Quality Management District (South Coast AQMD) and North American Representative Office of Shenzhen have signed a memorandum of cooperation to collaborate on decarbonizing ocean trade and inspire other similar efforts to build a green maritime economy around the Pacific Rim.

The new agreement establishes a framework to support the coordination of technical exchanges and programs, initiate shared efforts to deploy clean technologies, promote sustainable infrastructure development within the maritime industry and promote economic development prioritizing sustainability and public health.

Signers (front, seated left to right): Zhirong Yu, Chief Representative, North American Representative Office of Shenzhen; V. Manuel Perez, Board Member, South Coast Air Quality Management District; Huaxin Shen, President, Shenzhen Port Group Company; Dr. Noel Hacegaba, Chief Operating Officer, Port of Long Beach; Lawrence Shum, Managing Director, Yantian International Container Terminals. Witnesses (standing left to right): Wayne Nastri, Executive Officer, South Coast Air Quality Management District; Larry McCallon, Board Member, South Coast Air Quality Management District; Zhaoyang Hu, Chairperson, Shenzhen Port Group; Cai Zheng, Director of Port and Shipping Department, Transport Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality; Bonnie Lowenthal, President, Long Beach Harbor Commission; Ivor Chow, CEO, Hutchison Ports.

Port of Long Beach CEO Mario Cordero declared that “the ability to target shipborne emissions, a source we have little power to regulate as a local port authority, is an essential part of the strategic partnership.”

“This type of international collaboration is critical to our shared goal of decarbonizing shipping in the decades ahead,” said Long Beach Harbor Commission President Bonnie Lowenthal.

“Working together with our port partners, we have seen firsthand how we can accelerate the reduction of harmful emissions in nearby communities,” noted South Coast AQMD Executive Officer Wayne Nastri.

Shenzhen Port Group Chairman Zhaoyang Hu highlighted the enhancing communication and information sharing between the two ports, aiming to improve cargo transportation efficiency and establish more advanced green shipping corridors.

He added that these efforts will play a key role in achieving global Dual-Carbon Goal and fostering deeper economic and trade cooperation between China and the United States.

Hutchison Ports YANTIAN Managing Director Lawrence Shum recognized the importance of establishing partnerships and aligning efforts towards common goals, as the shipping industry is a cornerstone of global trade and economy.

The memorandum will also explore the possibility of a Sister Ports Agreement between the ports of Long Beach and Yantian.
