Gas shipowner and operator Seapeak has placed an order for two LNG carrier newbuildings at Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI), with the vessels tied to long-term employment.
The South Korean yard said the ships will be delivered by September 2028, with a combined contract value of about $499m.
The latest order further deepens the long-running relationship between the owner and the Korean shipbuilder.
Seapeak, controlled by infrastructure investor Stonepeak, already has five 174,000 cu m LNG carriers on order at SHI, scheduled for delivery in 2027. The newbuilds are backed by 10-year time charters with an unnamed international energy major, with extension options.
For Samsung Heavy Industries, the contract adds to a busy 2025. With this signing, SHI has secured 43 new vessels worth around $7.9bn, reaching just over 80% of its $9.8bn order target for the year. The tally includes 11 LNG carriers.
Formerly known as Teekay LNG Partners, Seapeak operates a fleet of more than 90 vessels, including around 50 LNG carriers when newbuildings are counted, alongside LPG, ethane and multigas carriers.
