Russian tanker reports drone attack off Turkey

A Russian-flagged tanker reported a drone attack off the Turkish coast on Tuesday. The ship was carrying sunflower oil. All 13 crew members were unharmed, Turkish authorities said.

The vessel, MIDVOLGA-2, reported the attack about 80 miles off Turkey’s coast. It did not request assistance. The ship continued its journey to Sinop port, according to Turkey’s Maritime Affairs Directorate.

Shipping company Tribeca said a drone struck the vessel. Authorities did not confirm who launched the attack. They released no further details.

Turkey said the tanker was sailing from Russia to Georgia. Tribeca said the ship was instead bound for Mersin. Both confirmed the vessel headed safely to Sinop without help.

A Turkish official said authorities informed all relevant parties, including Ukraine.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan warned on Monday that attacks on civilian shipping in the Black Sea were unacceptable. He urged all parties to stop targeting commercial vessels.

Last week, Ukrainian naval drones hit two Russian-linked tankers in the Black Sea. The ships were sailing to load oil for export. Ukraine has increased pressure on Russia’s energy trade.

Ukraine denied any involvement in the MIDVOLGA-2 incident. Spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi said targeting a ship sailing to Georgia made no sense. He said the attack may have been staged by Russia. Ukraine rejected what it called Russian propaganda.

Moscow did not comment.

Turkey continues to balance relations with both sides. It supports Ukraine militarily. It does not apply Western sanctions on Russia.

Turkey has hosted peace talks in Istanbul. It has also urged both sides to restart negotiations.

Ankara has repeated its demand for safe navigation in the Black Sea. Turkey shares maritime borders with both Russia and Ukraine.
