Railinc and Duke University’s Christensen Family Center for Innovation (CFCI) have launched a collaboration aimed at solving key freight rail challenges with fresh ideas and student-driven innovation.
The partnership will focus first on improving billing for railcar repairs, a process governed by hundreds of safety rules that often create delays and errors.
Railinc’s CarLogix platform already helps mechanical staff record repairs accurately by checking entries against industry rules in real time. Duke students will now explore how AI, mobile tools, and social media-style features can make the process even more efficient, especially for teams working outside traditional repair shops.
“This collaboration is about uniting innovation, academia, and industry to strengthen the rail network,” said Allen West, President and CEO of Railinc.
The initiative will deliver rapid prototypes with immediate impact and long-term potential, while giving Duke students hands-on experience solving real-world logistics challenges.
