QTerminals Kramer Rotterdam (QTKR) and Ocean Network Express (Europe) (ONE) have cut 500 tonnes of CO₂ in six months by using HVO100, a sustainable biofuel, in port shunting operations.
HVO100, already used in heavy-duty transport, can reduce lifecycle CO₂ emissions by up to 90% compared with standard diesel. It also lowers particulate matter and nitrogen oxide emissions.
The initiative shows how practical solutions can deliver results now while preparing for long-term innovations like electrification.
“Decarbonisation requires collaboration across the supply chain,” said Johan Pijpers, ONE’s Manager for Inland Operations Procurement (Europe & Africa). “Biofuels deliver results today and lay the foundation for future steps.”
Fred Groenendijk, CCO of QTKR, added: “Together with ONE, we are reducing CO₂, sharing expertise, and driving sustainable practices. Smart partnerships are key to real impact.”
Next, the partners will introduce a fleet of electric trucks for container movements. These will work alongside HVO100 trucks, further cutting emissions and advancing zero-carbon port logistics.
By combining immediate actions with forward-looking solutions, QTKR and ONE show how local collaboration can support the maritime sector’s net-zero goals.
