Sociedad Portuaria de Caldera (SPC) and Sociedad Portuaria Granelera de Caldera (SPGC) reported positive operational results for 2024, handling over 6.3 million tons of cargo, 638 vessel dockings, and the unloading of 50,000 vehicles.

These figures underscore Puerto Caldera’s strategic importance as the primary hub on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast and its significant contribution to the national economy.

The port remains a fundamental driver of employment, generating more than 1,000 direct and 6,000 indirect jobs, reinforcing the logistics chain, and supporting the country’s foreign trade. Thanks to the collaboration of employees, transporters, clients, and suppliers, SPC has successfully navigated daily operational challenges and adapted to the increasing demands of global trade.

In 2024, SPC invested approximately US$5 million in infrastructure, equipment, and employee training, introducing new operational techniques and professional development programs. Despite these efforts, the port has reached record occupancy levels, highlighting the urgent need for modernization to ensure long-term sustainability. Last year, SPC successfully handled the highest volume of container and general cargo operations, including iron, wood, cereals, fertilizers, vehicles, and heavy machinery.

The port’s capacity is under growing strain due to insufficient infrastructure to meet national demand. To address this, SPC has implemented decongestion strategies and invested in workforce development initiatives such as the BEST Program, which has trained over 300 employees in continuous improvement, workplace safety, and process optimization.
