PSA Belgium announced that its Europa Terminal at the port of Antwerp-Bruges will have an advanced shore power installation by 2026.

With a capacity of 7.5 megawatts, up to 100 container ships will be able to switch to green power each year, resulting in a CO2 reduction of more than 10,300 tons, which is equivalent to the annual emissions of about 625 average households in Europe.

“This €10 million (US$110 million) investment, partially funded by VLAIO – Flanders Innovation & Entrepreneurship, is a significant step towards a sustainable port,” said PSA Belgium.

The shore power installation is expected to ensure that ships do not need to use fossil fuels even while docked. Moreover, PSA Belgium said it will only use 100% green energy.

“With our Project Emerald, we are building the terminal of the future together with Port of Antwerp-Bruges and simultaneously paving the way for a climate-neutral port. The transformation of our Europa Terminal will not only increase our service level but also reduce our carbon footprint by 50%,” added the port operator.
