Ports of Indiana Launches New Ohio River Terminal Operator
Ports of Indiana has unveiled a new enterprise, Indiana River & Rail Terminals, establishing the largest general cargo operation on the Ohio River. This initiative will manage all general cargo facilities at the Jeffersonville and Mount Vernon ports, including six docks, six warehouses, and multiple rail transload facilities. It will also offer logistics services to more than 40 clients across the expansive 2,200 acres of port land.
Situated within the greater Louisville and Evansville metropolitan regions, the new venture serves the Southern Indiana Port District, which is recognized as the busiest inland port nationally. This port handles a remarkable 27.7 million tons of cargo annually by barge, ranking as the 22nd largest port in the United States and operating at approximately 60% greater capacity than any other inland port.
The operation is a collaborative effort with Superior River Terminals Indiana (SRTI), an experienced stevedore with a track record of managing facilities at Jeffersonville and Mount Vernon. This partnership is designed to consolidate operations and streamline the management of barge, rail, and warehouse services under a unified entity.
"We're thrilled to launch Indiana River & Rail Terminals as it broadens the general cargo operations at our Ohio River ports under a single brand and introduces new services for our customers," stated Jody Peacock, CEO of Ports of Indiana. "Indiana River & Rail instantly becomes one of the most significant general cargo operations on the Ohio River."
