Port of Oakland Seeks Development Proposals for Waterfront Howard Property
The Port of Oakland has officially launched a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to identify a developer for its significant 200,000 square meter Howard Property, strategically located along the Oakland waterfront. This expansive site, formerly a marine terminal until 2013, is now poised for a diverse range of potential future uses. It occupies a prime position, bordered by industrial operations to the west and the vibrant Jack London Square—Oakland's foremost waterfront entertainment hub—to the east.
The Californian port authority is actively soliciting a broad spectrum of proposals, welcoming ideas for maritime, light industrial, commercial, recreational, or water-oriented projects. This latest RFQ signifies the culmination of an extensive period of exploring various conceptualizations for the property. Notably, a 2019 Exclusive Negotiation Term Sheet with the Oakland A's for a mixed-use ballpark development expired in May 2023.
Presently, the Howard Property is predominantly utilized for short-term leases, accommodating functions such as container parking and other essential maritime services.
"The Port has a major opportunity to create a transformational development project that can provide critical economic benefits to Oakland and the region. We’re looking for development partners who will help realize the Port’s commitment to creating good-paying, local jobs for the region while fully activating the Howard Property," stated Jonathan Veach, Port of Oakland's Chief Real Estate Officer.
