Klaipeda Port Authority is firmly advancing its vision to transform the Lithuanian port into a pioneering center for port services, the maritime industry, and green energy.

This vision is encapsulated in its ambitious development strategy, which commits to investing EUR 308 million (US$320 million) over the next four years into cutting-edge infrastructure, value creation in maritime businesses, and sustainability initiatives.

Algis Latakas, Director General of Klaipeda Port Authority, stated that the aim is to evolve into a hub that not only responds to global changes but actively influences them.

Beyond routine annual investments in modernizing quays, renewing railway lines, and dredging shipping channels, the Port Authority’s focus during 2025-2028 will be on establishing crucial new infrastructure.

Cruise shipping infrastructure at Klaipeda Port will also see significant enhancements. Reconstruction of existing quays and construction of new ones will commence in the central part of the city, along with modifications to water depths.

Over the next three years, this area will also feature a new cruise terminal, becoming a vibrant public space with an open amphitheater, pedestrian and cycling paths, and areas for recreation and events.

Starting next year, ferries at the European port will connect to shore-based electrical power to minimize pollution and noise.

Installation of three electricity supply stations at the Klaipeda Central Terminal and one at the Klaipeda Container Terminal will support this initiative, along with plans to electrify additional quays.

Currently, construction is underway for a new modern fleet base expected to house three new ships by year-end, including two hybrid pilot boats and the nation’s first green hydrogen-powered waste collection vessel.

Furthermore, the Port Authority is spearheading the Baltic States’ inaugural green hydrogen production project, set to conclude next year. Collaboration agreements have been signed for using green hydrogen in stevedoring operations and rail transport.

To bolster the development of inland waterway transport, investment plans are in place for Jurbarkas Port.

These extensive plans underscore Klaipeda Port’s strategic commitment to not only sustaining but enhancing its competitive edge in the Baltic Sea region, while simultaneously upholding its responsibilities toward environmental stewardship and sustainable development.
