The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Port Newark Container Terminal, and the City of Newark have jointly announced the completion of a landmark 7.2 megawatt solar energy system at PNCT.

The solar system now supplies 50% of PNCT’s annual energy demand, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving local air quality. The installation has the capacity to feed surplus energy into the regional utility grid, providing clean power to Newark and surrounding communities.

PNCT is now among the world’s only container terminals to integrate on-site renewable energy at this scale.

The project is a cornerstone of PNCT’s long-term strategy to develop a net-zero microgrid, aligning with the Port Authority’s commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, both for itself and its operating partners.

Kevin O’Toole, Chairman, Port Authority of NY & NJ, stated that this project is a win for Newark residents, a win for the environment, and a win for the seaport.

The project was awarded Solar Builder’s Editor’s Choice Project of the Year for its innovative execution under active terminal conditions.
