Port Houston recorded another month of steady performance in May 2025, handling 381,640 TEUs, marking a 5% year-over-year increase.

Year-to-date, the port has processed 1,837,813 TEUs, a 4% rise compared to the same period last year.

Container trade remained balanced, with both loaded imports and exports up 1% for the month.

Outside of container traffic, general cargo volumes increased 12%, while steel imports grew 11% year-to-date.

Total tonnage across all public facilities reached 22.9 million tons by the end of May, reflecting a 2% increase overall.

Charlie Jenkins, CEO of Port Houston, highlighted the upcoming completion of Project 11, the final port-led segment of the Houston Ship Channel Expansion, expected later this summer. This major infrastructure investment will further strengthen the port’s long-term competitiveness.

Over the past decade, Port Houston’s container terminals have recorded the fastest growth among major U.S. ports, and the Houston Ship Channel remains the No. 1 U.S. waterway by tonnage, with 309 million short tons moved in 2023, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
