A Petrobras employee has died while supervising a stress test on a Petrobras FPSO being built in Hanwha Ocean’s shipyard in Geoje.
The supervisor from the Brazilian company died after falling from the Petrobras 79 FPSO. A structure fell into the sea from the stern deck of the vessel during a test on Wednesday.
The supervisor fell into the sea and was initially reported missing. The body was later found after Hanwha Ocean launched an emergency maritime search in cooperation with external agencies, including the police, fire department, and the Coast Guard.
The accident occurred during an offloading hose reel road test on the stern deck. The 312-tonne load test was not completed as when the weight was lifted to 280 tons, the deck collapsed and the structure fell into the sea.
Hanwha Ocean CEO Kim Hee-Cheul expressed deep regret over the accident in a written apology and offered condolences to the Brazilian government and Petrobras.
“Hanwha Ocean immediately suspended related operations on the vessel after the accident. We are working with relevant authorities to determine the exact cause and will take all necessary measures to prevent a recurrence,” he said.
This is the first industrial accident reported by Hanwha Ocean this year. Work at the shipyard will resume today after the special safety training and special safety inspection have been concluded.
