Mediator Offer Rejected in Montreal Port Dispute
Canadian Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon announced Tuesday that his offer to appoint a mediator to resolve the ongoing dispute at the Port of Montreal has been rejected. The proposal, made last week, aimed to break the deadlock between the Maritime Employers Association and the Montreal Longshoremen's Union concerning a new contract. Dockworkers at the port initiated an overtime strike earlier this month. MacKinnon stated that while he proposed a mediator to facilitate discussions, the parties have not yet reached an agreement. "They must find a path forward towards a negotiated settlement as quickly as possible," MacKinnon posted on social media platform X. "Federal mediators and I remain available to assist them, and I will continue to closely monitor the situation."
