Shipping has not lost what Albrecht Grell describes as its “pragmatic scepticism”, but, says the managing director of OceanScore, this should be viewed as something that is healthy considering the limited resources in most shipping companies to toy around with immature solutions.
“The change is that this scepticism is no longer leading to non-adoption,” Grell says.
OceanScore, founded in Hamburg three years ago, equips the maritime industry with the digital solutions needed to comply with complex emissions regulations, aiming to turn regulatory compliance from a burden into a competitive edge. The platform manages both EU ETS and FuelEU compliance in one integrated solution, as well as recently debuting its FuelEU Marketplace to pool FuelEU compliance surpluses.
“Shipping traditionally is quite conservative – for good reasons. Operations are too complex and stakes too high to just play around with immature solutions,” Grell says in conversation with Maritime CEO.
By July next year, OceanScore will have included UK ETS requirements into its Compliance Manager and related solutions. And in a year from now, assuming that MEPC approves the IMO Net Zero Framework and has agreed on some of the key implementation guidelines, customers will see the Compliance Manager getting ready for the inclusion of this framework as well.
“There’s a ton of work ahead so that the growing regulatory complexity does not lead to more complexity for our customers,” Grell says.
