Total container volume at the NWSA gateway reached 233,927 TEUs in October 2025, down 14.4% from October 2024. Tariffs continued to suppress demand, and comparisons remained negative due to unusually high volumes from Canada during the 2024 labor disruptions.

Full international imports fell 25.2%, while full exports rose 5.4%.
Year-to-date volumes reached 2,665,144 TEUs, down 2.9%. Full imports declined 7.6%, and full exports slipped 2.2%.

The Port of Seattle awarded the contract for the Terminal 18 shore power project, acting on behalf of the NWSA. Construction will begin in Q2 2026 and finish in late 2027, making Terminal 18 the third international cargo terminal in Washington with shore power. Terminal 5 went live in 2023, and Husky Terminal followed in 2025. The NWSA plans to equip all international terminals with shore power by 2030, with Washington United Terminal next in line. TOTE Maritime Alaska’s terminal has had shore power since 2010.

Domestic container volumes rose 1.2% year-to-date. Alaska volumes were flat, and Hawaii volumes increased 7.8%.

Other cargo segments:

  • Breakbulk: Down 18.1% YTD to 282,123 metric tons, pressured by high interest rates and tariffs.

  • Autos: Down 21.8% YTD to 229,466 units due to slowing nationwide auto sales driven by high interest rates and tariffs.
