Northern Lights JV DA has officially taken delivery of its new liquefied CO₂ carrier, NORTHERN PHOENIX, on December 2, 2025. The vessel was completed and handed over at Dalian Shipbuilding Offshore Co., Ltd. (DSOC) in China.

Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (“K” LINE) has entered into both bareboat and time charter agreements with Northern Lights for three of the four CO₂ carriers ordered by the company, including NORTHERN PHOENIX. The ship becomes the third vessel engaged by Northern Lights, which operates the world’s first full-scale commercial system dedicated to the transport and storage of CO₂.

As with the earlier vessels — NORTHERN PIONEER (delivered in November 2024) and NORTHERN PATHFINDER (delivered in December 2024) — NORTHERN PHOENIX will be managed by K LINE ENERGY SHIPPING (UK) LIMITED, a London-based subsidiary of “K” LINE.

The vessel will transport liquefied CO₂ from emitters outside Norway to the Northern Lights receiving terminal in Øygarden, western Norway. This capability enables international CO₂ movement, supporting the continued expansion of Northern Lights and the development of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) infrastructure in Europe.

“K” LINE stated that the operation of these CO₂ carriers aligns with its Environmental Vision 2050, supporting both its decarbonisation strategy and wider industry sustainability goals. The company plans to apply its growing expertise in CO₂ carrier operations to future business development as the CCS sector matures.

Vessel Specifications

  • Cargo tank capacity: 7,500 m³

  • Overall length: 130 m

  • Breadth: 21 m

  • Cargo conditions: Up to 19 bar(g) / as low as −35°C

  • Primary fuel: LNG

  • Efficiency technologies: Wind-assisted rotor sail and air lubrication system

NORTHERN PHOENIX marks another key milestone for scalable CO₂ transportation, helping accelerate Europe’s transition toward a lower-carbon future.
