Nestlé Collaborates with Maersk, CMA CGM, and Hapag-Lloyd to Shift Half of Global Shipping to Sustainable Fuels

In a groundbreaking initiative, Nestlé, the world’s largest food and beverage company, has partnered with Maersk, CMA CGM, and Hapag-Lloyd to transition 50% of its global shipping operations to alternative fuels immediately. The company’s move to cargo ships using fuels derived from waste, such as used cooking oil, aims to slash annual greenhouse gas emissions from shipping by approximately 200,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent.

Stephanie Hart, Executive Vice President and Head of Operations at Nestlé, emphasized the significance of these agreements in reducing emissions and promptly decreasing the carbon footprint. While acknowledging the interim nature of this solution, Nestlé remains committed to encouraging the development of long-term decarbonization solutions in shipping and distribution.

Christine Cabau, Executive Vice President at CMA CGM, expressed pride in this pioneering agreement with Nestlé, highlighting its unique commitment to decarbonizing the entirety of scope 3 shipping emissions. The initiative underscores the viability of existing solutions to address the decarbonization challenges faced by Beneficial Cargo Owners (BCOs).
