NC State and Railinc study modal shift to boost freight efficiency

NC State University and Railinc have partnered on a new research initiative focused on improving freight efficiency through smarter use of rail. The study will use advanced big data analysis to identify opportunities to shift long-haul freight from trucks to trains.

The research aims to show how even small changes in freight allocation can deliver meaningful benefits. These include lower shipping costs, reduced highway congestion, and fewer emissions. The study will also provide insights to support future infrastructure planning.

Railinc CEO Allen West said the rail industry has already made major gains in efficiency and that the research can help trucking shippers better understand the advantages of rail.

Early findings suggest strong potential. NC State’s Dr. George List noted that a shift of just 2% from truck to rail could significantly increase intermodal rail volumes and help justify new infrastructure investments.

The project builds on NC State’s previous work analyzing freight modal demand across multiple industries. That earlier research laid the foundation for a broader national-level assessment.

According to Dr. Daniel J. Findley of NC State’s Institute for Transportation Research and Education, the collaboration will deliver practical insights for industry leaders and policymakers. He added that rail is often overlooked despite offering clear benefits in cost, capacity, and sustainability.

The initiative also marks the start of a wider partnership between NC State and Railinc, with future plans for expanded research, student involvement, and workforce development.
