Munich Airport Resumes Flights After Snowfall Disruption, Passengers Advised to Confirm Departures
Following days of heavy snowfall and sleet causing disruptions at Germany’s second busiest airport, Munich airport has resumed flights. However, passengers are cautioned to verify their flight status before heading to the airport.
The airport, experiencing over 80% flight cancellations and extensive delays last Tuesday, urged travelers to check for confirmation before arriving. Despite most flights being operational now, Munich airport issues a warning, advising passengers not to visit the airport for rebooking. Instead, rebooking should be handled through airlines’ apps, websites, or phone lines.
Approximately 1,500 passengers were stranded during the disruptions, with some spending the night in the terminals. Munich airport provided camp beds, drinks, and food, and passengers also had the option to book hotel rooms themselves, with reimbursement assured.
Responding to complaints on social media, Munich airport cited the challenge posed by “wet snow” at temperatures near freezing point. Lufthansa, a major airline at the airport, anticipates ongoing disruptions throughout the week and advises passengers to check flight status on their website or app before traveling.
This incident follows a similar situation at Munich airport in December last year when 133 flights were canceled due to a frozen runway. The airport’s response attributes the challenge to the specific conditions of wet snow at temperatures hovering around freezing, making it more challenging to manage than colder weather conditions.
