Montreal Port Dockworkers Launch Overtime Strike Amid Contract Stalemate
Dockworkers at the Port of Montreal commenced an overtime strike on Thursday morning, the port authority confirmed, as contract negotiations remain largely unproductive. This indefinite, partial strike means all port terminals will continue operations, but dockworkers will cease working overtime. The port authority anticipates this action will slow down or disrupt the handling of approximately 50% of goods, encompassing food, pharmaceuticals, and industrial raw materials, both imported and exported through the port. Around 10 vessels scheduled to arrive at the port are expected to be affected. The Maritime Employers Association and the Canadian Union of Public Employees have not yet provided immediate comment. Negotiations, involving federal mediators, resumed last week but have yet to yield an agreement. Both parties had previously identified meeting scheduling as a significant obstacle. Unionized workers at the Port of Montreal previously participated in a three-day strike late last month, affecting the Viau and Maisonneuve terminals, which handle roughly 40% of the port's container traffic.
