Manila International Container Terminal (MICT), the flagship facility of International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI), introduced two fully electric terminal tractors into its operations, marking the first deployment of this kind of equipment at a port in the Philippines.

According to MICT Chief Executive Officer Christian Lozano, the initiative is part of the terminal’s broader push to modernize its infrastructure through cleaner and more sustainable technologies.

The deployment is being treated as a pilot program aimed at reducing emissions and improving energy efficiency in day-to-day operations. It also aligns with ICTSI’s long-term environmental targets, which include reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

The two electric units in use at MICT (Qomolo E-truck S2 models) were manufactured by Shanghai Westwell Technology Co., Ltd. Each tractor is powered by lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO₄) batteries, with a rated motor output of 263kW and a peak performance of up to 410kW. The vehicles operate entirely without tailpipe emissions.

The current phase will focus on evaluating the tractors’ performance in real-world port conditions. A wider rollout will be considered based on the results of this initial deployment.

“We will continue to evaluate technologies that help reduce our environmental impact while maintaining efficient operations,” said Lozano.
