Greek shipowner Evangelos Marinakis, through his Capital Group, has placed a fresh order for four LNG carriers with South Korea’s HD Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries.
The deal, worth around $1.03bn, involves 174,000 cu m newbuilds, priced at $257m each, with final delivery expected in the second half of 2028.
The order is part of a larger trend of Marinakis expanding his LNG carrier orderbook, particularly in South Korea, where Hyundai Samho had won multiple deals, with the most recent in February 2024, also for four newbuilds worth roughly $270m apiece.
The same yard was earlier this year contracted by Capital for a series of six 8,400 teu LNG dual-fuel containerships worth about $140m each and slated for delivery in 2028.
The latest deal takes the orderbook of the Marinakis’ gas shipping business, Capital Gas, to nearly 30 ships across LNG, ammonia and CO2 segments and 26 LNG carriers overall ordered at HD Hyundai Heavy yards since July 2018.
