Maher Terminals, one of North America’s busiest container terminals, has deployed Nokia’s Edge platform and private wireless technology to improve efficiency and security across its operations in Port Elizabeth, New Jersey.
The 450-acre terminal, part of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, handles around two million containers each year. To manage this scale, Maher needed secure, high-speed connectivity to support yard, crane, and gate operations.
Nokia, together with partner Future Technologies Venture, delivered a solution that combines private wireless connectivity, edge computing, and industrial devices. This setup allows Maher to track assets in real time, strengthen cybersecurity, and streamline container handling.
“We chose Nokia to enhance network reliability and communications while meeting our cybersecurity goals,” said Maher Terminals CIO Laura Markham. “The solution gives us scalable connectivity as we adopt more advanced cargo-handling systems.”
Future Technologies Venture CEO Peter Cappiello highlighted the flexibility of the platform, saying it can support a wide range of logistics use cases. Nokia’s David de Lancellotti added that the deployment will help Maher improve visibility and achieve both operational and sustainability goals.
The system integrates Nokia DAC private wireless, ruggedized industrial devices, and a Network Digital Twin that uses live telemetry to validate performance. Together, these tools give Maher more control over data, communications, and long-term planning.
