Maersk and Kenya Ports Authority announced the launch of a maritime training programme, aiming to enhance Kenya’s maritime sector and bolstering the country’s Blue Economy.
The launch event saw the presence of Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir, Governor of Mombasa County, along with representatives from the Royal Danish Embassy in Nairobi, Bandari Maritime Academy, Shippers Council Eastern Africa, and Kenya Ships Agents Association.
The programme will offer fully funded, 12-month sea-time training aboard Maersk vessels for 10 Kenyan cadets, addressing a critical gap in practical maritime training for graduates.
Oliver Bunting, CFO & Acting Managing Director at Maersk Kenya, emphasized the program’s impact, stating that this initiative is not merely about training but also about empowering cadets to fulfill Kenya’s maritime potential and transforming their professional futures by providing hands-on experience within one of the largest global shipping networks.
This effort also strengthens the bilateral ties between Kenya and Denmark, following a 2021 Memorandum of Understanding, and aligns with Kenya’s Vision 2030 goals for human resource development.
Captain William Ruto, Managing Director on behalf of Kenya Ports Authority noted the local challenges in acquiring critical sea-time training and commended the program for its potential to develop the shipping and maritime sector’s human capital in Kenya.
Cadets for the program were selected through a rigorous process by Maersk’s global fleet team and will undergo comprehensive training that adheres to international standards, preparing them for career opportunities within Maersk and beyond.
