Lloyd’s Register (LR) has launched a new risk-based notation, Fire (C, Risk), to improve fire safety on container ships. The notation helps designers, shipyards, owners, and operators plan next-generation vessels or update existing fleets.
Fire (C, Risk) comes with guidance to help shipowners and operators choose effective, best-practice fire mitigation measures. Each solution is tailored to a vessel’s specific fire risk profile.
Introduced in the July 2025 update to LR’s Rules and Regulations for the Classification of Ships, the notation is the first to apply LR’s ShipRight Risk Based Certification (RBC) methodology to container ship fire safety. It provides a flexible framework for identifying and validating safety enhancements from design through operation.
The notation also supports LR’s broader push for innovation, digitalisation, and data-driven design verification.
Gabriele Sancin, LR’s Risk Notation Technical Lead, said:

The notation is designed to give the industry confidence in both newbuilds and retrofits, providing clear standards for safer, smarter container ships.
