Lloyd’s Register (LR) has granted Approval in Principle (AiP) to Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) for its new floating offshore wind turbine design, SnapWind Float.
The design, unveiled at Gastech 2025 in Milan, aims to unlock deeper water sites and boost global offshore wind capacity. SHI optimized SnapWind Float for regions with limited heavy-lift equipment, workforce, and space for large-scale construction.
LR reviewed the concept against its rules and international standards, confirming the design’s safety and feasibility and clearing the way for commercial development.
“As the offshore wind industry seeks new solutions to unlock deeper waters and higher capacity sites, the SnapWind Float demonstrates significant progress toward establishing floating wind as a commercially sustainable solution at scale,” said Sean van der Post, LR’s Global Offshore Business Director.
SHI CTO Hae-Ki Jang called the approval “an important milestone” that validates the company’s technology and supports the next stage of offshore wind development worldwide.
