LR approves HHI forward accommodation LNG carrier design

Lloyd’s Register (LR) has granted Approval in Principle (AiP) to HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) for its next-generation LNG carrier. The design features a forward accommodation layout and integrates Mitsui O.S.K. Lines’ Wind Challenger wind-assisted propulsion system (WAPS).

The accommodation and bridge block are relocated from the aft to the bow. This fore-deckhouse design reduces aerodynamic drag, improves propulsion efficiency, and can lower fuel consumption. The open deck above the cargo area allows flexible placement of multiple WAPS technologies and supports future integration of alternative fuels and battery storage.

LR’s AiP followed a full technical evaluation of safety, regulatory compliance, and feasibility, including HAZID risk assessments.

Panos Mitrou, LR’s Global Gas Segment Director, said the approval supports safe adoption of innovative, net-zero technologies. HHI’s CTO, Hong-Ryeul Ryu, highlighted the company’s commitment to sustainability and decarbonization. MOL’s Yoshihiko Sugimoto emphasized the role of WAPS in achieving maritime net-zero goals by 2050. David Wamsley from the Republic of the Marshall Islands noted the collaboration creates a sustainable and profitable path for shipping.
