Kongsberg Maritime has secured a contract to supply the full equipment package for India’s first fully electric tug. The vessel will be built under the country’s Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP), marking a major step toward maritime decarbonisation.

Awarded by Mandovi Drydocks in partnership with Ripley Group, the deal covers Kongsberg’s permanent magnet azimuth thrusters, energy storage systems, automation and control platforms, and digital performance tools. The package also includes full system integration and lifecycle support from Kongsberg Maritime India’s service team.

The tug, designed by NavNautik India, will deliver 60 tons of bollard pull. It is scheduled for delivery in late 2026 and will operate at Deendayal Port in Gujarat, one of the flagship sites for India’s GTTP initiative.

Annette Holte, Country Manager at Kongsberg Maritime India, said the project reflects both technological progress and trust from the Indian maritime sector. “This contract is not only a milestone as our first full-electric tug, but also a strong signal of confidence in our expertise,” she said.

Mark Callaway, Senior Sales Manager for Tug Systems, added that providing a complete solution gave the builder and owner confidence in meeting their emission reduction goals.

The Ripley Group, together with Mandovi Drydocks and NavNautik, selected Kongsberg for its comprehensive package and alignment with GTTP requirements. A spokesperson said the collaboration would deliver India’s first battery-powered tug, advancing the country’s sustainable port operations.
