Kongsberg Maritime, Seadrill Limited, and Hanwha Drilling have formed a strategic alliance to develop the next generation of remote Dynamic Positioning (DP) technology for offshore drilling. The partners aim to create new standards for safety, efficiency, and centralized operations in offshore drilling. The initiative will also establish the technical and regulatory foundations needed for the safe adoption of remote DP systems.

The project combines Kongsberg Maritime’s automation and communication technologies with the operational experience of Seadrill and Hanwha Drilling. The companies plan to develop centralized and repeatable processes that reduce the cognitive load on rig crews, improve decision-making, and enhance operational performance at sea.

According to Johnathan Dady, Director of Rig Innovation and Technology at Seadrill, remote DP could transform how crews manage dynamic positioning. He said the technology will allow rig teams to focus on maintaining safe and high-performance operations, while supporting a broader shift in offshore drilling practices.

Eivind Alling, SVP Americas Region and Head of Kongsberg Maritime Inc., said the collaboration marks an important step in applying advanced technologies to offshore drilling. He noted that remote DP will create an intelligent operational architecture that uses automation to improve safety, reduce risk, and optimize vessel performance.
