Klaipėda Port has reached a major milestone in its green hydrogen production project, a first for Lithuania and neighboring ports. Key equipment has arrived at the site where the hydrogen station will be built, and pipeline tests at the location have been successfully completed.

Algis Latakas, Director General of the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority, said: “The arrival of this equipment marks an important step forward for Lithuania’s energy transition. Klaipėda Port is becoming the first port in the Baltic Sea region to produce green energy and apply it in real operations. This milestone opens new opportunities for our maritime sector and industry, and demonstrates that Klaipėda Port is ready to lead with cleaner, more sustainable solutions.”

The station will feature a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyzer and start operating next year. At full capacity, it will produce about 127 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. Part of this hydrogen will power Lithuania’s first vessel driven by green hydrogen, currently nearing completion.

The project is implemented under Lithuania’s Economic Recovery and Resilience Plan, funded by the EU’s NextGenerationEU recovery and resilience facility. The total estimated cost is approximately €12 million, with about €6 million financed by EU funds.
