Klaipėda Port’s green hydrogen project is progressing rapidly toward completion as a crucial milestone was achieved when the future hydrogen station’s main component the electrolyzer successfully passed factory testing in Italy.

Algis Latakas, General Director of Klaipėda State Seaport Authority, stated that the port Authority and its partners have ensured the green hydrogen base’s core systems function flawlessly, allowing the project to remain on schedule.

The green hydrogen production and supply station, which will begin operating at Klaipėda Port next year, will house a polymer electrolyte membrane type electrolyzer.

When operating at full capacity, approximately 127 tonnes of green hydrogen will be produced annually, with portions used to power the country’s first green hydrogen-driven vessel, currently nearing completion.

The electrolyzer designated for Klaipėda is being manufactured at the “IMI Remosa” plant in Cagliari, Italy.

Klaipėda Port will become the first in Lithuania and among the Baltic States to produce and supply green hydrogen.

The decision to undertake this ambitious project was made considering global sustainability trends, environmental challenges, and the objective to promote energy transformation and development while contributing to greenhouse gas emission reduction.

The company that won the public tender announced by the Klaipėda Port Authority is expected to complete construction by year-end.

Once the site is finished, hydrogen equipment installation and testing will follow. All construction and installation works are scheduled for completion by February next year.

The hydrogen production and refueling station’s total estimated cost is approximately EUR€12 million, with around EUR€6 million financed by EU funds.
