DP World has completed the first phase of its Living Seawalls project at Jebel Ali Port. The company deployed 1,000 eco-engineered panels that transform flat seawall surfaces into habitats for marine life. The initiative enhances biodiversity and sets a new benchmark for sustainable port infrastructure in the region.

The project, developed with Living Seawalls and the Sydney Institute of Marine Science, will expand to 6,000 panels by 2028. Once finished, it will create the region’s longest continuous waterfront structure supporting functioning ecosystems.

Each panel features varied shapes and textures that mimic natural rock formations, allowing marine species to settle and grow.

Abdulla Bin Damithan, CEO and Managing Director of DP World GCC, said: “Ports play a critical role in coastal resilience. This programme shows how infrastructure can support trade while restoring natural habitats.”

Biodiversity monitoring at Jebel Ali will begin in 2026 to study the ecological impact.

The project supports DP World’s Ocean Strategy and global biodiversity targets under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

The initiative builds on a pilot at Peru’s Port of Callao, where 66 species were recorded over 12 months, including seven unique to the panels. No invasive species were found, and algal diversity and ecosystem functionality increased.
