The Jacksonville Port Authority (JAXPORT) celebrated the arrival of Quetzal—Crowley’s newest LNG-powered container ship—on its maiden voyage.

With a capacity of up to 1,400 TEUs, Quetzal offers greater cargo space than the vessels previously used by Crowley in its Central American and Caribbean trade routes with the United States.

Powered by lower-emission LNG, the vessel marks a significant step toward greener maritime logistics.

Scheduled to join Crowley’s operations throughout 2025, each vessel in the class features 300 refrigerated container plugs and will serve markets in Guatemala, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic.

Operating primarily within Crowley’s Central North American Zone service, Quetzal will regularly call on JAXPORT.

LNG fuel for the vessel will be supplied by Eagle LNG through its on-dock fueling station located at Crowley’s terminal.

Two Avance Class vessels will maintain a regular schedule at JAXPORT, while the remaining ships will call at the port as needed.

JAXPORT CEO Eric Green presented a plaque to Crowley Chairman and CEO Tom Crowley in honor of Quetzal’s inaugural visit to Jacksonville.

Tom Crowley stated that with the launch of this vessel and others in the Avance Class, there will be an enhancement of the service offerings and an advancement of the company’s emissions-reduction goals.

Eric Green added that the new vessels not only expand cargo capacity but also strengthen the trade connections with Central America and diversify the business across key markets.

Alongside Quetzal and the upcoming Avance Class ships, Crowley also operates two LNG-powered ConRo (container/roll-on roll-off) vessels—Taíno and El Coquí—serving Puerto Rico from JAXPORT.
