Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) plans to request ¥26.59 billion for ports and harbours in fiscal 2026, according to Japan International Freight Forwarders Association (JIFFA). The budget covers the period from April 2026 to March 2027. The total remains largely unchanged from the previous year.
The proposal includes ¥26.33 billion for public works and ¥2.66 billion for non-public projects. Spending on non-public projects rises by 1%.
MLIT allocates ¥66.61 billion to strengthen international strategic container ports. It sets aside ¥11.87 billion to upgrade domestic ferry and Ro/Ro terminals. Another ¥126.08 billion targets disaster prevention, mitigation, and national resilience.
The ministry also plans new initiatives. It aims to introduce remote-controlled gantry cranes to support AI-driven terminals. The goal is to improve working conditions, boost productivity, and stabilise cargo-handling operations. MLIT also plans to enhance chassis and container location management.
On taxation, MLIT intends to extend a special tax measure for replacing port work vessels by two years. The measure supports port development, maintenance, and disaster prevention.
