Iran-backed Houthis Warn of Renewed Red Sea Attacks
Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels have issued a warning that they will resume drone and missile attacks on Red Sea shipping. This comes after Israel and the United States launched attacks on Iran on Saturday. Iran has long been a supporter of the Houthis, who currently control 40% of Yemen. Media reports, citing two senior anonymous Houthi officials, suggested that attacks on merchant vessels could commence as early as Saturday night. However, there has been no official confirmation from Houthi media outlets. The Houthis' attacks, launched in late 2023 in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, previously disrupted the crucial Red Sea-Suez Canal trade route. Consequently, vessel operators rerouted services connecting Asia and the Middle East to Europe and the U.S. onto longer voyages around the southern tip of Africa. Naval forces from the European Union and the U.S. have been escorting merchant vessels in the region while also conducting airstrikes within Yemen. The frequency of Houthi attacks had previously decreased as Iran grappled with its own internal challenges.
