Ionic expands Orca AI Platform across entire fleet

Greek shipowner Ionic has decided to deploy Orca AI’s navigation and safety platform across its full fleet of crude tankers and bulk carriers. The move marks another key contract win for the maritime AI specialist.

The Athens-based company operates eight crude tankers and 11 bulkers. Seven tankers already use the Orca AI system. Now, the company will install the technology on a newly delivered tanker and all dry bulk vessels.

The platform combines the SeaPod digital watchkeeper with the FleetView shoreside application. Together, they give crews and office teams real-time awareness of navigational behaviour, enhancing decision-making and risk management.

By using computer vision and data analytics, the system detects and classifies targets earlier and more accurately. This helps reduce incidents in congested waters and poor visibility, while also supporting more efficient navigation. The technology aligns with Ionic’s target of “zero incidents, zero spills.”

Also, Spyros Vlassopoulos, Managing Director at Ionic, said the feedback from crews has been positive, especially regarding performance in challenging weather and thermal tracking. He added: “The Orca AI platform adds a powerful layer of support for our crews, helping us to mitigate operational risk.”

Ionic has already seen fewer close-encounter events since adopting the system. In addition, the company praised Orca AI for its training and support.

Orca AI co-founder and CEO Yarden Gross welcomed the partnership, noting that Ionic’s decision reflects how forward-looking owners are adopting AI to improve safety and efficiency. “By continuously updating the platform, we help customers like Ionic improve fleet visibility, safeguard seafarers and assets, and enhance service,” he said.
