“First-Ever Methanol-Ready Large Cruise Ship Launched in Finland for TUI Cruises”

In a pioneering move towards sustainable cruising, the maiden voyage of the world’s first large cruise ship designed to operate on methanol or e-methanol is set for the summer of 2024. The Mein Schiff 7, the third of three sisterships built at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland for Germany’s TUI Cruises, has been adapted for future use of alternative fuel as part of the cruise line’s commitment to achieving net-zero ambitions.

Tim Meyer, CEO of Meyer Turku, expressed enthusiasm about Mein Schiff 7, stating, “It is the first of its kind at the Meyer Turku shipyard and marks a huge leap forward in our pursuit of industry leadership in the green transition.” While specific design changes were not disclosed, the ship has been equipped with “built-in methanol capability” for future use, with initial operations slated to commence using lower-emission marine diesel fuel.

TUI Cruises sees this adaptation as a strategic investment in the future, aligning with their goal to offer the first climate-neutral cruises by 2030. The cruise industry is witnessing a divergence in fuel choices, with many opting for LNG, but TUI Cruises is among those forging ahead with methanol propulsion. Notably, the cruise line has two LNG-powered ships on order with Fincantieri, highlighting their commitment to diverse sustainable solutions.

Despite industry divisions, TUI Cruises stands out with its forward-thinking approach, adapting Mein Schiff 7 for methanol use. Construction on the groundbreaking vessel began in June 2022, and the float-out process, initiated in challenging conditions in December, marked a significant milestone in the ship’s development. The ship’s construction, including catalytic converters to reduce emissions and shore power capabilities, underscores TUI’s dedication to environmentally conscious cruising.

Mein Schiff 7 is set to debut in the summer of 2024, offering cruises to the North Cape and Iceland from Germany, followed by Baltic cruises starting in September 2024. The ship’s innovative features, including methanol readiness, catalytic converters, and advancements in waste and wastewater treatment, position it as a frontrunner in the evolving landscape of eco-friendly cruise travel.
