SeaLead’s termination of the charters on 16 sanctioned ships has caused the idle fleet to reach a 15-month high, at 125,000 TEU. This compares to 28,000 TEU in the week of 11 August.
Consultancy Linerlytica said that four of the affected ships are heading to Khor Fakkan, while the remaining ships are waiting for orders at Chinese and Malaysian anchorages after completing cargo discharge in China and Port Klang. Four more ships are due to be redelivered by SeaLead in the coming week.
The Singapore-based SeaLead had told Container News that it is in talks to charter in some ships to replace the lost tonnage.
Linerlytica remarked: “The charter market has not been impacted as overall vessel supply is still tight and charter rates remain very firm. Activity is mostly focused on the smaller sizes where rates continue to edge upwards.”
