As South China Sea remains a key global region for maritime trade, Container News decided to analyze and synthesize the available information and give insights about how increasing geopolitical tensions in the South China Sea affect global shipping companies and the operational dynamics of major regional ports, which serve as crucial subsystems in the global trade network.

The analysis took into consideration three key ports located in the South China Sea – Shanghai, Singapore and Hong Kong – and evaluated their performance in terms of connectivity and container throughput. In a second phase, we tried to assess the operational status of three major shipping companies – MSC, Maersk and COSCO – on handling potential disruptions on their trade lines.
