ICTSI will invest R$948 million to expand and modernize its Rio Brasil Terminal at the Port of Rio de Janeiro. The project, running from 2025 to 2029, will increase the terminal’s capacity by 70.5%, from 440,000 TEUs to 750,000 TEUs annually, reinforcing Rio de Janeiro as a key logistics hub for Brazil’s Southeast and Midwest regions.
The investment includes R$414.4 million for infrastructure upgrades and R$533.5 million for advanced equipment. Planned works cover yard expansion, building rearrangement, container-handling equipment upgrades, modernization of utilities, and implementation of automation and technology to improve efficiency and customer service.
Minister of Ports and Airports Silvio Costa Filho highlighted the project’s importance for national port competitiveness, economic growth, and job creation. ICTSI CEO Roberto Lopes added that the expansion will enable the terminal to handle larger Panamax and post-Panamax vessels. Moreover, this expansion will help relieve congestion at the Port of Santos.
Also, the first new cranes are expected to arrive by mid-2026, with full project completion projected for 2029–2030. Anders Kjeldsen, ICTSI Vice President for the Americas, emphasized the company’s commitment to bringing global operational standards and technology to Brazil’s port sector.
Lastly, the expansion includes advanced access control, monitoring systems, regulatory compliance upgrades, and sustainability measures to align with ICTSI’s global decarbonization goals.
