HPC Hamburg Port Consulting (HPC) will develop the final business case for the Port of Newcastle’s Clean Energy Precinct (CEP). The project will assess the commercial potential of green ammonia production, storage, and export at the site.
The CEP covers 220 hectares of redeveloped industrial land. Backed by A$100 million in federal funding, it aims to cut 660,000 tonnes of domestic and 1 million tonnes of export emissions each year. Green ammonia from the site will supply global markets, marking Newcastle’s shift from coal exports to clean energy.
HPC will create a practical plan to attract investment and guide the port’s clean energy transition. The team will identify business opportunities, partnerships, and funding models that align with global hydrogen demand. The work supports Australia’s export goals and Europe’s push for decarbonisation.
Craig Carmody, CEO of the Port of Newcastle, said: “This business case will help us strengthen energy ties with Europe and secure investment. It builds on our partnership with the Port of Hamburg for a green shipping corridor and supports our Net Zero 2040 goal.”
Christina Prieser, Associate Partner at HPC, added:“We will turn ambition into action. Our job is to show how green ammonia fits into global trade flows and how to move from potential to real-world operations.”
