Höegh Evi, a global leader in marine energy infrastructure, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with port of Port-La Nouvelle to develop a floating terminal for hydrogen imports.

The terminal will receive hydrogen from producers in the Middle East, North Africa, and the Americas, positioning Port-La Nouvelle as a crucial hub for clean energy imports into Europe.

“Höegh Evi, as a leader in floating terminal infrastructure, is leveraging our expertise to enable large-scale hydrogen imports to Europe within this decade,” stated Erik Nyheim, President & CEO of Höegh Evi.

“With its strategic location and established infrastructure, Port-La Nouvelle is perfectly positioned to serve as a major entry point for hydrogen and low-carbon fuels, advancing the clean energy transition across Europe,” he added.

The floating terminal, part of projects like HySoW Hydrogen and in collaboration with the gas pipeline operator Teréga, will link Port-La Nouvelle to key hydrogen transport networks. This development strengthens the energy and industrial appeal of the Occitanie region, fostering economic growth and new jobs.

“In recent years, the port of Port-La Nouvelle has made significant investments to expand and prepare the port for the future. Our focus is to become an enabler in the green energy transition. The port of Port-La Nouvelle is eager to accommodate new types of traffic, particularly those associated with renewable energies and especially those linked to hydrogen molecules. We look forward to working with Höegh Evi towards our common goal of turning Port-La Nouvelle into the European gateway hub in the Mediterranean for hydrogen,” commented Hans Kerstens, CEO of SEMOP Port-La Nouvelle.

The terminal aims to facilitate imports of up to 210,000 tonnes of hydrogen annually by 2030, contingent on the development of France’s hydrogen pipeline. The partners are currently conducting feasibility studies and infrastructure design to prepare for the project.
