HMM has placed a KRW 4 trillion newbuilding order to expand and modernize its fleet. The investment covers twelve 13,000 TEU container ships and two Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs).
The 13,000 TEU vessels will be LNG dual-fuel ships built by HD Hyundai Heavy and Hanwha Ocean. With tightening decarbonization rules from the IMO and EU, LNG is seen as one of the most practical lower-emission fuel options. According to Clarksons Research, nearly half of all newbuildings ordered last year used alternative fuels, with over 70% powered by LNG.
By adding these LNG dual-fuel vessels to its growing portfolio — which already includes methanol- and LNG-powered ships — HMM is reinforcing its leadership in sustainable shipping. The two new VLCCs will further strengthen and diversify the company’s bulk fleet.
This major order aligns with HMM’s 2030 strategy to build a flexible, future-ready fleet capable of adapting to global market and regulatory changes.
