HJ Shipbuilding & Construction (HJSC) has commissioned DAESUN Shipbuilding & Engineering to build deckhouses for eight 7,900-TEU eco-friendly container ships. This marks the first partnership between the two mid-sized Busan shipbuilders for deckhouse construction.
Deckhouses are critical superstructures that house the bridge, navigation equipment, crew cabins, offices, and welfare facilities. Each deckhouse, comparable in size to a 10-story building, accommodates around 30 crew members during long voyages. They also require careful design to support navigational efficiency and crew comfort, integrating high-value equipment such as radar, gyrocompasses, GPS, and complex piping and cabling.
HJSC traditionally built deckhouses in-house. Rising demand for eco-friendly commercial ships, naval vessels, and U.S. Navy MRO projects led the shipbuilder to outsource production to increase flexibility and focus on core operations. DAESUN was chosen for its proven deckhouse expertise.
The first deckhouse was delivered last month following a lighting-up ceremony and quality inspection, verifying electrical, instrumentation, and power systems.
An HJSC official said the partnership will create a win-win outcome, boost revenue for both companies, strengthen the regional shipbuilding ecosystem, and support broader economic growth. HJSC plans to expand collaboration using regional supply chains to maximize synergy.
