HHLA has kicked off this year’s Blue Port Hamburg with a spectacular display: its container gantry cranes at all Hamburg terminals, including O’Swaldkai, are lit in blue. For the first time, the blue glow extends beyond Germany to HHLA’s terminal near Tallinn, Estonia, and the METRANS rail gantry cranes in Prague.
The highlight of the opening was a blue-lit HHLA container completing its journey through the European HHLA network to mark the company’s 140th anniversary. Michael Batz, the internationally renowned light artist behind Blue Port, said the container symbolizes Europe’s interconnectedness and the power of modern logistics to bring people and ideas together.
The lighting ceremony featured the illuminated container arriving on an electric heavy goods vehicle from HHLA’s freight forwarding subsidiary CTD. HHLA CEO Angela Titzrath, Michael Batz, and Hamburg Senator for Economic Affairs Dr. Melanie Leonhard pressed the start button to launch the installation.
The Blue Port artwork will remain on display until September 21, bathing Hamburg, including the Speicherstadt warehouse district and HafenCity, in magical blue light. HHLA’s contribution includes 17 cranes across its terminals and ten more at its historic headquarters.
This year’s Blue Port also marks the culmination of the blue container’s 13,000-kilometre journey through Europe, visiting HHLA terminals in Trieste, Tallinn, and METRANS hubs in Prague and Dunajská Streda. The initiative celebrates HHLA’s anniversary and underscores its brand message: “The Power of Networks.”
