Heysham Port to host UK’s first green shipping corridor

NatPower Marine and Peel Ports Group will begin installing shore power infrastructure at Heysham in September 2025, marking the launch of the UK’s first green shipping corridor. The first connection will go live later that year, with all four berths expected to be electrified by 2026.

Once complete, Heysham’s routes across the Irish Sea will be able to operate with zero emissions while at berth and at sea, enabling full electric propulsion of ferry services. The project is expected to cut more than 10,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually, alongside significant reductions in NOx and SO₂.

The £10 million Heysham investment forms part of a wider £100 million partnership between NatPower Marine and Peel Ports Group to deploy e-ship charging infrastructure across ports in Great Britain and Ireland. Peel Ports said the initiative will accelerate its ambition to make Heysham the UK’s first net-zero port.

NatPower Marine plans to expand its charging network globally, targeting 120 ports by 2030. In the UK, the company is also developing over 12.5 GW of renewable energy capacity and 100 GWh of battery storage to power port electrification projects.
