German ocean carrier Hapag-Lloyd has achieved a significant milestone in its fleet expansion by adding the 2023-built, 2,433 TEU vessel Little Concert to its charter fleet.

This move propelled the Hamburg-based company’s charter fleet capacity beyond the 1 million TEU threshold for the first time in its history.

The newly chartered boxhsip has been chartered from Greek shipowning firm Minerva and will be deployed on Hapag-Lloyd’s Taiwan Express (TWX) service, operating between Singapore, Taichung, Kaohsiung, and Tanjung Pelepas.

With the latest acquisition, Hapag-Lloyd’s charter fleet has surpassed the 1 million TEU mark for the first time in its history. As the charter fleet continues its upward trajectory, the German shipping line aims to maintain momentum and further expand its global network.

Evolution of Hapag-Lloyd’s charter TEU capacity over the years

Philipp Joerss, Senior Director of Vessel Portfolio Management at Hapag-Lloyd, commented: “We continue to modernize our fleet which not only enables us to provide our customers transport solutions that deliver on our number one for quality promise but also supports our new Gemini partnership goal for 90% schedule reliability.”

From an environmental perspective, Joerss stated that these modern and efficient vessels will contribute to the decarbonisation goal of cutting absolute CO2e emissions by one-third by 2030.

In January, Hapag-Lloyd celebrated another milestone, surpassing 300 ships in its fleet for the first time in history, while also achieving a 19% increase in total capacity in 2024.

Hapag-Lloyd’s total fleet capacity has now surpassed 2.35 million TEUs, cementing its position as one of the top five container shipping powerhouses.
