Germany’s Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) and Canada’s Vancouver Fraser Port Authority have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen collaboration across various port-related priorities, including decarbonization, safety, and cruise operations.

Signed on 7 November, the agreement outlines plans to enhance cooperation in key areas such as maritime decarbonization, safety advancements, digital innovation, and sustainable cruise management.

“I am delighted to have signed this agreement with the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority. This further expands our network of partners who want to work with us on the decarbonization of maritime transport. In addition, Vancouver is a valuable sparring partner for us in the exchange of efficient cruise handling within the city,” commented Jens Meier, CEO of HPA.

Joint initiatives will focus on evaluating the ports’ readiness for alternative fuel bunkering, leveraging technologies like drones to improve safety, optimizing operations through predictive analytics, and establishing best practices for data governance and cybersecurity. Additionally, the partnership aims to explore avenues for achieving sustainable cruise port accreditation.

As part of this agreement, both port authorities will provide opportunities for their employees to gain hands-on experience by engaging with the daily operations and challenges at the counterpart port.

“The Port of Vancouver is a key trade hub for Canadians and their businesses, and we are thrilled to partner with the Port of Hamburg on work that will improve operations, sustainability and safety at both ports,” stated Peter Xotta, President and CEO of Vancouver Fraser Port Authority.
